Students in Film Studies, Media and Communications at New England Colleges, Universities and high schools have a unique film competition that is geared strictly for their work. The Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival is pleased to announce its 13th Annual New England Student Film Festival. This competition-based event will again be launched in August of 2018 as part of the 22nd annual RIIFF, August 7-12th and from there expand into year round programming, with screenings, classes and forums.

According to Michael F. Drywa, Jr., Esq., Board President of Advisory Board of the Rhode Island International Film Festival, “We are excited to continue this unique sidebar to our Festival. Given the number of students in the region who major in Communication, Film Studies and media arts, our goal is to provide a solid platform that honors and encourages their work, while promoting networking and professional growth.”

Cited as one of the “Best International Film Festivals in the United States,” by Chris Gore of Film Threat, the Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) is the largest film festival in New England screening a record 310 films in 2017. Now, in its 22nd year, RIIFF celebrates the independent spirit in filmmakers throughout walkingthe world and is dedicated to the creation of opportunities for artistic exchange among filmmakers, distributors, movie-lovers and the film community at large.

Of special note, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences® elected to recognize the Rhode Island International Film Festival as a qualifying festival for the Short LIve Action, Animation Short and Documentary Short Films category for the Annual Academy Awards. RIIFF was also notified in August 2015 that it is now a BAFTA-qualifying event and in 2016 that it is a qualifying event for the Canadian Screen Awards. With more than 7,000 film festivals worldwide, only 6 have this recognition.

The deadline for entry to the Annual New England Student Film Festival is June 15th (postmark date.) Please contact us directly if you still want to submit a film to RIIFF 2016 and you've missed the deadline date, click here

RIIFF is offering a special reduced entry fee of $30 for this competition. Student Filmmakers can down load the application form here.

Filmmakers chosen as part of the festival will be notified in mid-July by the Festival’s programming staff. Special screenings of accepted work will take place on Friday through Sunday, August 7-12th at venues throughout the city of Providence. Note that all applicants must either be registered at a New England high school or institution of higher education, or a recent graduate (within the last two years.)

The Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival, sponsored in part by the City of Providence, the Providence Tourism Council, the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, SONY, Rule/Boston Camera, Cox Media, Final Draft, Amtrak, and ABC6 has gained a widespread reputation for its dedication to the interaction between the filmmakers and the audience.
