FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival™
(RIIFF) for independent film is calling for gay and
lesbian entries to its 17th Anniversary Festival. The
Festival will take place August 7-11, 2013 in the state's
beautiful capital city, Providence and throughout Rhode
Island. This year, RIIFF will once again expand its exclusive week-long
cinema focus that addresses gay and lesbian concerns.
The side-bar, the Providence LGBTQ Festival, will feature an open pubic colloquium,
a Video Lounge, film screenings, after parties and a "Meet the Director,"
forum. Additionally, a "fest preview" will
take place in June, highlighting some of the overlooked
jewels from past festivals and offering a taste of what
is to come in August.
Throughout the spring, the Festival will also host "You Be the Judge" nights where attendees can help select this year's film selections. This will kick off March 9-10th in New York City at the Javit's Center at the 20th Annual GLBT Expo where RIIFF and the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Film Festival host their popular Video Lounge.
The theme of this year's sidebar, which will include guest panels, is "Are We Heading Into a Post Gay Society."
We are very proud to continue in 2013 with the Flickers LGBTQ Screenplay Competition (formerly Barren Branches). Submissions
may be either a feature length or a short film script;
and will be judged by a distinguished panel of industry
professionals, educators, peers and film fans. The Grand Prize winner will also receive
prizes valued at over $2,000. This includes Final Draft
software, a ScriptBiz Scholarship, full Festival passes for the winner and their guest, and numerous opportunities
for screenplay promotion within the industry.
A Word on the Gay
Market and why your business should support this Festival
(please click here)
"RIIFF is very excited to be able to expand and evolve this special focus within our Festival. Over the years,
we have been fortunate to be able to premiere such gay-themed
titles as "Married and Counting," "Black, White + Gray," "A Four Letter Word," 'Boy Culture," "The Green," "Sonoma," "Eating Out," 'Jim in Bold,' 'The
Politics of Fur,' 'The Notorious C.H.O.,' 'Behind the
Red Door,' '24 Nights,' 'East of A,' 'Irma Vep,'
'Red Rain,' and so many many more. We are proud that we were able to create
a break-out platform for what has proven to be exciting
and often cutting-edge work -- and has been so-well received
by our audiences and community," said Lawrence J. Andrade, Flickers Board member.
"In an era where hate crimes and bullying dominate the media and
where intolerance reigns in the name of religious virtue,
it is important that the message gets out loud and clear
that gays and lesbians are 'Part of the Family'--the
international family of human kind. It is also important that we not forget
why we live in a secular state in the USA, and that our hard fought
freedoms are based on separating dogma from human needs
and compassion."
This side-bar is a clear statement that we value all
levels of artistic expression and in our own small way
will help foster communication, dialogue and understanding.
WHO CAN ENTER
The Festival is accepting shorts, documentaries, feature-length
films and videos. Films and videos must have been produced
after 2011.
The Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival is one of only a handful of broadly focused, independent festivals
in New England accepting works of any type (dramatic,
documentary, experimental, animation), on any subject
matter, and in any genre.
Filmmakers may enter their films either in competition
or out of competition. Films in competition will be
judged by a jury of distinguished industry professionals,
peers and film fans. Whether in or out of competition,
all films will be eligible for Audience Fest Favorites
awards.
The Festival's goal is to recognize achievement and
innovation in a variety of filmmaking and storytelling
disciplines while providing an opportunity to secure
wider distribution.
RIIFF FESTIVAL STRUCTURE
The structure for this year's main Festival will include
multiple screenings of both film and video over a six-day
period. Filmmakers will be available for discussion
and commentary at an Opening Night Gala Soirée, Awards Brunch, Closing Night Gala, film forums, master classes, walking tours, and colloquia. The extended late entry deadline is June 15, 2013.
